Orthopedics is a branch of medicine that deals with musculoskeletal system diseases and their treatment. The root of the word pedi in the word orthopedics refers to the ancient Greek term foot. These musculoskeletal diseases include the arms, which we call the upper extremities, and the legs, which we call the lower extremities. Shoulders, hips, cervical spine, thoracic spine and lumbar spine are important areas of interest to the orthopedics and traumatology department. The department of orthopedics and traumatology is not a branch that only deals with bones. In this regard, the most common wrong applications to our clinic are jaw, nose, head and rib traumas. Orthopedics and traumatology are branches that examine and treat diseases related to the musculoskeletal and nervous system, which mostly concern the extremities.
Among the diseases most frequently treated by Orthopedics and Traumatology are, of course, situations in which the extremity is exposed to trauma, such as fractures, dislocations, trauma, crushing, strain injuries and sports injuries. Apart from this, it treats diseases such as joint calcification, which we call arthrosis, cartilage damage, hand surgery and microsurgery, pediatric orthopedics, gait disorders, spinal curvatures, back, waist and neck pain, bone measurement and osteoporosis treatments, orthopedic vitamin deficiencies. Bone tumors and soft tissue tumors are another group of diseases treated by the Orthopedics and Traumatology department. Muscle and tendon tears in the shoulder, meniscus tears in the knee, and cartilage damage in the ankle are treated with the closed arthroscopic method.
In fracture, dislocation and trauma surgery, there are plaster and splint applications, plate and screw fixation methods, nail surgeries in long bones, and in severe trauma, there are fixator methods that we call external fixator, where we fix with iron rods installed from outside. There are surgery options called prosthesis surgery and arthroplasty for joint calcification. The most common types of surgery we perform are knee prosthesis, hip prosthesis and shoulder prosthesis for joint calcification. Shoulder muscle tears, shoulder dislocations, and shoulder arthritis can be treated arthroscopically. Similarly, knee anterior cruciate ligament injuries, meniscus tears, and cartilage damage are the diseases we treat most frequently arthroscopically. Small cartilage damage, that is, chondral damage, in the ankle can be treated with the arthroscopic microfracture method. With hip arthroscopy, diseases such as labrum tears, capsule tears and hip impingement syndrome can be treated with high success. Diseases such as spinal curvatures, scoliosis and kyphosis are other important diseases treated by orthopedics and traumatology. Surgical and non-surgical treatment options are available. Some of our treatment areas include gait disorders in children, instep, flat feet, hip dislocation and other congenital extremity diseases.
Many of the diseases mentioned above have surgical and non-surgical treatment methods, which we call conservative. As a result of many years. These treatments, which have been determined by scientific studies, should be considered on a patient basis. In cases where conservative treatment is not sufficient, the Orthopedics and Traumatology department treats these diseases with closed, open, mini open and minimally invasive methods. Orthopedics and Traumatology surgery is defined as the treatment of diseases that cannot be treated with medical treatments, medications or plaster splint applications, with surgical methods under anesthesia in the operating room.
The doctor who diagnoses these diseases that concern the musculoskeletal system and joints, manages and shapes the treatment after this diagnosis, follows up and plays a role in helping the patient regain his health is an Orthopedics and Traumatology doctor. The diploma of general orthopedics and traumatology doctor is obtained after 5 years of specialization training. After 5 years of training, an Orthopedics and Traumatology Doctor can focus on specific diseases and surgeries of interest, increase his experience in that direction, and improve himself in these areas. In general, trauma surgery and trauma patient management are managed by all Orthopedics and Traumatology doctors, while other sub-branches are related to the development of doctors in their own fields of interest. For example, an Orthopedics and Traumatology Doctor who wants to specialize in hand surgery studies on this subject and becomes a sub-branch specialist and improves himself only in the field of hands. It may continue as hand surgery.
