What is Hip Arthroscopy Surgery?
Hip arthroscopy surgery is a surgery performed using 2 or 3 holes to treat some cartilage and capsule problems in the hip. There is no open wound or incision in hip arthroscopy surgery. The surgery takes approximately 1 or 1 and a half hours.
How is Hip Arthroscopy Surgery Performed?
It is done using a traction table. Since the hip joint is generally a narrow joint, it is aimed to increase the joint opening slightly on the traction table so that the camera tips can reach the joint. In order to see the traction on the hip joint and the entry of the camera tips into the joint, it is checked under scopy.
Which Diseases Can Be Performed with Hip Arthroscopy Surgery?
The most common diseases we treat with hip arthroscopy surgery are hip impingement syndromes and early stage hip calcification. It is possible to remove cysts occurring around the hip joint, paralabral cysts, intra-articular tumors or foreign bodies with arthroscopy. Very rare fractures occurring in the hip joint socket, which I call acetabulum fractures, can be treated with arthroscopy. Free cartilage or bone fragments in the hip joint formed after trauma can be removed by hip arthroscopy surgery with the help of a camera. Hip arthroscopy surgery is also very useful in some hip-related diseases, which we call avascular necrosis. However, the disease we use most frequently in clinical practice is hip impingement syndromes.
Hip Arthroscopy Surgery for Hip Impingement Syndromes
Since the hip joint is a ball-socket-shaped joint, we may encounter impingement syndrome originating from the ball part of the hip, the socket part, or both sides, which we call mixed type. These impingement syndromes can generally present as pain in the groin. Pain in the groin occurs in positional situations where hip flexion increases, such as sitting on low floors and wearing shoes and socks. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis are provided using imaging methods such as X-ray and MRI.
What is the Recovery Period After Hip Arthroscopy Surgery?
Recovery time and type vary depending on the disease being treated. If the compression caused by hump or protrusion in the femoral head, which is in the shape of a hip ball, has been treated, only shaving is done. After this surgery, patients can walk on their feet. The stitches do not need to be removed because they are dissolvable or aesthetic. Wound control or dressing continues for 2 weeks. Since the capsule is also taken, the joint range of motion increases immediately. If labrum repair has been performed and anchors have been used, load restriction is applied for 3 weeks and then the physical therapy process continues.
What are the Complications of Hip Arthroscopy Surgery?
Nerve damage may occur when a traction table is used. Since it is a minimally invasive surgery, the possibility of this risk is very low. Complications of anesthesia may include allergies or infection.
What are the Materials for Hip Arthroscopy Surgery?
The materials of the closed camera system, which we call light source, camera, RF and shaver, are used. These material tips are used individually for each patient and are not reused. Labrum tear repair is performed with anchors. Femoral head shaving is done with the help of a burr.
